On Aug. 19, Patrick Cheptiony, a 20 year old native Kenyan, was six days away from completing training at Riverside Flight Center in Tulsa, when he was involved in a tragic car accident. His father, John, whose family had used much of their financial resources to send Patrick to aviation school, traveled thousands of miles away from his home in Nairobi, Kenya to Tulsa to care for his son. John found Patrick in Intensive Care at St. John Medical Center, badly injured and paralyzed from the waist down. On Aug. 31, John checked into a family suite at The Hospitality House of Tulsa, a faith-based, non-profit organization providing a ‘home away from home’ for families in medical crisis.

“Patrick had a few days to finalize his training as a commercial pilot, and we had spent our limited resources to train him, when the unexpected and very challenging situation happened,” says John. “I praise the Lord for saving his life, and it is our greatest joy that Hospitality House is helping us during our greatest need. We are humbled in what the Lord is doing for us and others through Hospitality House.”

Hospitality House of Tulsa to Double Occupancy for Families in Need

Expansion Campaign Details and Dedication announced
Hospitality House of Tulsa will more than double the number of medical families they serve through their “H2 – Hospitality to the 2nd Power” Expansion Campaign.
The expansion campaign, which began in January 2010, will provide funds to operate, furnish and remodel the second facility. Within just 17 months, Hospitality House reached 70 percent of their goal of $1.3 million. They began renovations on their second facility in June 2010, which will include six additional family suites as well as a Day Room. The Day Room will serve the families on the waiting list immediately by providing them with a place to shower, nap, eat, let their children play and receive prayer support.

Plan to "Dine for a Difference" when Hospitality House of Tulsa continues its monthly connection of sports fans, supporters, local media, sports celebrities and personalities at Tulsa-area restaurants on a Tuesday night.

Players and coaches from Oral Roberts University will be featured during the event, which runs from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hideaway Pizza, 8204 S. Harvard Ave.

A percentage of the restaurant's revenue that evening will go to Hospitality House, which offers a home away from home for families who are caring for loved ones in medical crises.

Hospitality House, 1135 S. Victor Ave., has seven suites that include a living area, kitchen, bedroom and private bathroom. Volunteers often provide evening meals. Also available are prayer support, a washer and dryer for individual use, local telephone calls and internet access.

The faith-based organization desires to serve all families in need during a medical crisis regardless of religious preference or background.

Find more information at this website. Website Survival kits touch families 'An act of kindness' for some

by: SARA PLUMMER World Staff Writer

For the second year, Hospitality House of Tulsa kicked off its annual fundraising campaign by giving to others.

Volunteers handed out 350 waiting-room survival kits to families in 16 area hospitals last week as part of the nonprofit's Room in the Inn, Room in our Hearts campaign.

Hospitality House provides free lodging and meals to people who have family members in medical crisis in area hospitals.

Toni Moore, president and CEO, said Hospitality House provides rooms to 190 families a year, but there is always a waiting list.

"The need is so huge," Moore said.

About 25,000 people travel to Tulsa for in-patient treatment every year and 50 percent of those are on Medicare, Medicaid or are uninsured, she said, meaning their families likely can't afford long hotel stays.

Providing waiting families with kits that included bottled water, snacks, a pillow, blanket, reading material and personal hygiene items is something simple the organization can do.

The items in the kits were donated by individuals, companies and churches. Puzzles, books and crayons were also handed out to children in waiting rooms.

Beth Ann Wallace, spokeswoman for Hillcrest Medical Center, said what Hospitality House does is really important.

"Until you are in the position of waiting for a family member to heal, you don't understand what it's like," Wallace said. "Families are appreciative; hospitals are also appreciative."

Most people who receive the waiting- room survival kits are touched by the generosity, Moore said.

"It's nice to see an act of kindness today," said Henryetta resident Wilma Hayes, who was in the Hillcrest surgery waiting room Thursday night. "It makes you wish you could see more acts of genuine kindness. Makes you long for that."

Pryor resident Al Hanel, who had been waiting with five other family members at Hillcrest for almost 12 hours, said the kit was a happy surprise.

"This was a welcome break for us," said Hanel as he was waiting to hear about his brother-in-law's surgery Thursday.

Hospitality House also puts on a 15-minute Christmas light show synchronized to music at its location at 11th Street and Victor Avenue every night from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. until Jan. 3. The show contains 5,100 lights representing the number of nights Hospitality House offered lodging to people last year.
